Calling all animators

If you like dramatic tension infused with intrigue and love, then you'll relish the chance to create a silent movie that could appear on a large screen accompanied by one of the world's best orchestras. Winning entries for this open competition will also receive a money-can't-buy placement with an award-winning animation studio and an Introduction to Final Cut Pro X course.

The challenge

The challenge is open to anyone with a passion for animation. Using one of the originally composed Silent Movie tracks, recently rediscovered in archives during preparations for moving to the new Library of Birmingham (opening 2013) and recorded by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO), you're being asked to create a piece of animation that includes the word 'Birmingham' or an iconic image of the city.

Choose from the following Silent Movie tracks:

Finalists' work will appear on a giant screen at Symphony Hall, Birmingham, accompanied by the CBSO on Friday 20 April 2012 as part of the Friday Night Classics: Classic Chaplin night. The animation course will be held at Birmingham City University's NTI Birmingham and the placement will be with CharacterShop, Birmingham.

The judges

A panel of experts and enthusiasts, including CharacterShop's Andy Guest, The Brothers McLeod's Myles McLeod, Dice Production's Louis Hudson and Skillset's Saint John Walker and Rebecca Davies will judge the animation.
