Children's Library Promise

We want you to enjoy all the fantastic things that Birmingham Libraries have to offer for children and young people. To make sure that you know all about us, we have written down a promise about what we will do for you:

  • We will give you your own free library card
  • We will always listen to you (talk to library staff or email us)
  • We will make sure that you are safe
  • We will be nice to you, help you and respect you
  • We will make space for Mums to feed and change their babies
  • We will have books and other materials and equipment to help you with your homework
  • We will ask you for suggestions of what books you want us to buy
  • We will make sure you get 2 free books before you start school
  • We will have story sessions in the summer holidays and throughout the year!
  • You will be able to use computers out of school hours

Creating the Children's Promise

To make sure we got our promise right, we asked some children from Kidz.comm (run by Harborne Hill Extended Provision Cluster) to help us write it. We also asked fantastic author and illustrator Steve Smallman to design our posters including the lovely dragon!

The Children’s Library Promise is displayed in libraries and community venues across the city. There is a choice of two beautiful poster designs.
