How to Use a Search Engine

When you do not know the address of a website you are interested in, search engines can help to get you started.

  • First of all, decide on which search engine you would like to use (see "Search engines explained" for some suggestions).

  • Type a keyword or short phrase, that describes what you are looking for, into the Search box.

  • After only a few seconds the search engine will show you a list of website matches. Select the site you would like to view.

  • You will now be transferred to the website you have chosen.

There are many different search engines available so if you cannot find the information you were looking for using one search engine, simply try another.

Search Tips

  • It's really important that all words keyed into the search box have been spelt correctly, as many search engines will only look for words exactly as you have spelt them.
  • If you are searching for something quite specific, a good tip is to put your keywords in inverted commas e.g. "fruit bats". The search engine will now only list web sites about Fruit Bats, rather than fruit and bats in general.
