Arranging your marriage
A valid marriage must be solemnized in a place which has been sanctioned according to law for the celebration of marriages after legal preliminaries have been observed.
For all marriages (except those taking place in the Church of England or the Church in Wales) legal preliminaries must be completed at a register office before the marriage takes place.
Legal preliminaries can be started up to 12 months ahead of the date of marriage.
In some circumstances it may be possible to make preliminary arrangements for a marriage more than 12 months ahead.
