Birmingham Young Poet Laureate 2007-2008

Matt Windle was the third Young Poet Laureate for Birmingham

17 year old Matt was one of more than 60 young people who applied to be our third Young Poet Laureate. The announcement was made on National Poetry Day, Thursday 4 October 2007.

Matt was studying plumbing at Sandwell College and had had a successful athletics and football career with the third best 100m time in England for his age group and trials for Birmingham City.

Matt started by writing song lyrics and since then his lyrics have developed into poems.

Matt said, "I'm just a normal 17 year old teenager that likes 'chillin' and going out with my mates. I use poetry as a way to express my feelings and to help me calm down. I am different to the type of people that you would usually associate with poetry. With my interests people wouldn't think that I love to write poems."

"For example I am a boxer, the last thing people would think about boxers is that they might like to write poems but I want to show people that you can have as many different talents as you want, you don't have to stick to a certain type. Writing poetry is not just for a certain type of person and I want to let people know that you can learn from poetry and it can really help you out when things get hard, to express your feelings and to help your self."
