Bickley Wake Green 1843

Woodlands Estate, Wake Green, Moseley

Moseley Wake Green plan 1843

Moseley Village appears in the top right-hand corner of this map. The turnpike road along the bottom of the map is the Stratford Road; the road running through Moseley at the top of the map is the Alcester Road. This area was in Worcestershire until 1911, when it became part of Birmingham

In the 1840s businessmen in Birmingham were starting to look for houses outside the town centre; the 1839 Chartist riots may have played a part in encouraging people to move from the centre to a safer location. Edgbaston and Moseley were both fairly close to the centre and it was feasible for men to walk to work from homes there. An 1876 plan of the area around Moseley Grove, near the top of this map, shows that some of the large estates on this map had been sold so that smaller properties could be built.
