Wish you were here? Handsworth on postcards 1900s
History on postcards
Handsworth is well represented on postcards in the Victorian and Edwardian era. This may come as a surprise to many people now, perhaps still tending to associate postcards with the seaside or the main cities and tourist locations. Coverage is typical as for many areas - the local streets, churches, parks etc, and as such they provide an intriguing glimpse of life in the parish. Most of the cards were, of course, in sepia or black and white but there was a vogue for hand tinted "colourised" cards. The two cards shown here are good examples of colourisation.
