What is a nursery class?

A nursery class is part of an existing primary school.

In Birmingham admissions to a nursery school or nursery class is not managed by Birmingham City Council. You will need to contact the school directly, which will provide you with an application form and information regarding the availability and allocation of places. The criteria for nursery places will be provided to you by the school. For a list of nursery schools and nursery classes available in your area contact the Children's Information and Advice Service on 0121 303 1888.

Dates for applications for 2015 will be posted here when available

If your child is not offered a place, the nursery school or class usually keeps a waiting list and will advise you should a place become available. Alternatively, the Children's Information and Advice Service is able to provide details of private childcare providers offering free early education entitlement places if there are no places available in a nearby nursery school or class.

There is no central appeal procedure for parents if your child is refused a place in a nursery school or class. Appeals must be made directly to the school concerned.

The Admissions Criteria page sets out the Admission Criteria for Local Authority Nursery Schools, Nursery Classes and Community Day Nurseries clarifying if your child qualifies for a full or part-time place. Go to the Criteria page.

In order for schools, private, voluntary and independent sector providers to be able to offer a full time place to an eligible child, they must meet the quality criteria agreed by Birmingham City Council.
