Travelling by HGV
To get the goods and services we need in Birmingham we all rely on freight, whether it is transported by road, rail, air or canal. Most familiar to us is the freight carried on the roads by Heavy Goods Vehicles which we see delivering to the shops, work places and hospitals.
Road Freight in Birmingham
Anyone who parks vehicles overnight weighing between 3.5 to 40 tonnes gross vehicle weight, has to have an Operators' Licence to comply with the Goods Vehicles (Licensing of Operators) Act 1995. Licenses are obtained at the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (www.vosa.gov.uk/).
Concerned about the Parking of Goods Vehicles?
If you are concerned that Heavy Goods Vehicles are illegally parked, you can check all registered licences at individual postcodes at: VOSA Operator Search (www.tan.gov.uk).
The West Midlands Freight Quality Partnership (FQP)
The FQP (www.westmidlandsltp.gov.uk) is a partnership between Local Authorities, Transport Authorities, Commercial Freight Operators and other interested organisations. The FQP aims to promote efficient and effective distribution of freight movement in the West Midlands sub-region, covering Wolverhampton, Birmingham and Coventry. If you are a freight operator we are particularly interested to hear your views as we are actively recruiting new members.
