New charter for council suppliers: Have your say

Ambitious proposal to promote social responsibility throughout Birmingham City Council’s supply chain and beyond are the subject of a new consultation – and local businesses are being urged to have their say.

The city council has launched its draft Birmingham Business Charter for Social Responsibility. Business people throughout the city are being asked to read the draft charter and answer the survey questions by Wednesday 28 November 2012.

The overall aim is to ensure suppliers’ support for improving the economic, social and environmental well-being of the area. Should it be adopted, suppliers that sign up to the charter will commit themselves to six main principles, listed below:

  • Local Employment
  • Buy Birmingham First
  • Partners in Communities
  • Good Employer
  • Green and Sustainable
  • Ethical Procurement

Full details of these principles can be found in the draft Birmingham Business Charter for Social Responsibility.

The council’s survey seeks to collect businesses’ views about the proposal. The responses will be used to review the draft and make any necessary changes before a final version is prepared for adoption by the council and its suppliers.

Companies keen to tell the council what they think can take part by downloading the Business Charter for Social Responsibility Consultation questions.

Once complete, the forms should be returned to cps@birmingham.gov.uk with the words ‘Business Charter for Social Responsibility’ as the email subject.

The closing date for responses is Wednesday 28 November 2012.
