A Brief History

Sutton New Hall Cemetery was officially opened by the Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Councillor Mahmood Hussain on the 30 September 2002 and is the first new municipal cemetery in Birmingham since 1923.

The area of land that has been developed at present is roughly 1/7th of the total land available. As such the surrounding landscape will remain unchanged for many years. The cemetery has been designed to expand in stages as necessary. The next development stage incorporates plans for an on site Chapel which will be non-denominational, catering for all service requirements.

Grave Sections

All graves are Free Church and are therefore dedicated at the time of burial. There is however a small section reserved for Orthodox burial. Adult graves for one or two burials and for reservation, are currently available.

Cremated remains plots for one, two or four burials, or for reservations, are also available.

Sections are either Lawn (with or without 'headers') or traditional. Lawn type headstones are set on concrete. No kerbing, fencing or chippings are permitted but the ground may be cultivated up to 18" (46cm) from the headstone.

Traditional have headstones and/or full kerb set which can run the length of the grave space. No fencing is permitted. Horizontal tablets of specified size only are permitted on cremated remains plots.

A copy of the Rules and Regulations relating to the cemetery can be obtained from the office.

Memorial Benches

Memorial benches may be purchased in memory of a loved one. They may be placed in a chosen spot within the cemetery in consultation with a member of the office staff.

Temporary Memorials
(up to 24 months)

These are available in Gold or Silver and can be printed with a motif if required. For further details please see our memorial page or contact the cemetery office

Facilities Available

Public toilets, including disabled facilities, are located adjoining the office building. There is a small car park, and although currently there is no chapel on site, the chapel at Sutton Coldfield Crematorium may be available for a service prior to burial and is only a short drive away. An organist is available and CDs or tapes may also be played.
