Birmingham City Council’s greener solution to lighting

Belgrave Middleway lighting project, part of the council’s sustainable lighting replacement scheme, was completed on budget and on time.

Through the successful Birmingham Construction Partnership the council’s Highway services and Urban Design have carried out vital improvement works to the Belgrave underpass, Bristol Road, by installing lighting which is sustainable, efficient, cost effective, and at the cutting edge of lighting technology; there will be a saving of 30% in energy and maintenance costs, along with a more efficient lighting system which, notify engineers, remotely, when lights are out.

Councillor Len Gregory, the Cabinet Member for Transportation and Street Services, said: "A sustainable future for the city of Birmingham depends on each of us making decisions which support the aims of sustainable development, and thereby improve the quality of life, both for us and for future generations.

"This new sustainable lighting system is at the cutting edge of technology and will make a significant contribution to reducing the city’s carbon dioxide consumption by a staggering 140 tonnes per year. It is just one of the many ways the city council aims to meet its strategic outcomes of creating a city that is clean, green and safe."

To put this saving into perspective 140 tonnes is equivalent to:

filling 1 hot air balloon, or 140,000 party balloons

the fuel to heat a home or school from 68,000 trees.

spending 2,800,093 hours on a personal computer (PC).
