Warning on Council Tax scam

Householders in Birmingham are being warned to not disclose personal bank details to bogus officials after reports that citizens are receive phone calls from people claiming to represent the city’s Council Tax department.

The warning has been issued by Birmingham City Council’s Trading Standards service and Revenue and Benefits Division after the issue came to the attention of Bartley Green Councillor Vivienne Barton.

Cllr Barton said: "An elderly couple in their eighties who are my constituents received a telephone call from someone purporting to be ‘Diane’ from the City Council’s Tax department, telling them that their Council Tax banding had been reduced, meaning they were due a refund of £3,000........."
