City of Culture update

Birmingham City Council will learn more about the inaugural UK City of Culture bidding process tomorrow when officials attend a seminar in Liverpool.

Culture Secretary Ben Bradshaw launched a UK-wide competition in July, looking to build on the success of the European Capital of Culture event in Liverpool last year.

Now cities that have expressed an interest in becoming the UK’s first City of Culture in 2013 are heading to Merseyside for detailed discussions.

Acting Strategic Director of Environment and Culture Sharon Lea said: “As one of the cities with a declared interest in City of Culture status, we now need to know more about the bidding process.

“Birmingham already has an exceptional cultural offer from the grassroots right up to the likes of Birmingham Royal Ballet, the CBSO and a world class museum and art gallery.

“We also have one of the youngest, most diverse populations in the country and art and culture plays an important role in the overall quality of life. The arts can also play a major role in driving regeneration – look at Liverpool’s experience as European Capital of Culture.

“So this seminar offers an opportunity to learn from Liverpool and find out more about the whole UK City of Culture bidding process.”

Cities attending the Liverpool seminar will have the opportunity to discuss the process with expert assessors Regeneris.

The UK City of Culture competition aims to build on the success of Liverpool's year as European Capital of Culture 2008, which had significant social and economic benefits for the area.

The winning city will be one that is able to deliver a substantial programme of cultural activity which leads to a demonstrable step-change in their area, and a lasting legacy.
