Working Neighbourhoods Fund

The Working Neighbourhoods Fund (WNF) ran from 2008-2011 to help tackle worklessness and low levels of skills and enterprise, in areas of high deprivation. A total of £114 million WNF was originally allocated to the city during this time, although this was later reduced. This fund was administered by the BeBirmingham Strategic Partnership through a number of sub partnerships, who allocated it to a number of projects.

In January 2011, external evaluators were appointed to evaluate how the WNF, managed by the Birmingham Economic Development Partnership, was used. The evaluation has now been completed and the Final Reports are available below. Individual reports look at:

  • An Overarching Summary Report
  • How the fund was targeted at increasing the city's economic output and productivity, and mitigating against the impact of the recession on the business community (Outcome 2) and
  • How the fund was targeted at tackling worklessness in the city (Outcome 4)

The Innovation Fund

One of the projects funded by the WNF was the Innovation Fund which complemented the work of Employment Connections by promoting learning to encourage continuous improvement and development of employment support.

The Innovation Fund supported 40 research studies and pilot projects testing approaches to supporting progress towards employment.

As part of this work a Good Practice Guide for Practitioners was developed. The Guide gives funders, commissioners and service providers steps and considerations in project design and delivery, learning from Innovation Projects.

The Guide Summary gives an overview of the good practice identified in the Guide to help you find the information you need.

Worklessness Bulletins

During the life of the WNF a number of bulletins were produced to update the community on the progress of the numerous projects. Read more below.
