Tame Valley Viaduct Local Pinch Points bid

An application for Local Pinch Point funding has been made to the Department of Transport which seeks to ensure Birmingham's accessibility is maintained.

As a key manufacturing centre at the very heart of England, Birmingham continues to act as a key driver of the nation’s economic prosperity. The city’s prosperity is underpinned by its connectivity to the rest of the United Kingdom. Its excellent rail, road and air links allow the city to act as a both a regional manufacturing centre and as a city with a reputation internationally as a centre of high-tech, skilled industry and academic development.

Maintaining the city’s good accessibility is critical if this situation is to be maintained and built upon. The city lies at the centre of the midland motorway ‘box’ made up of the M6, M42 and M5 with good links to the M1, M4, M40 and M6 Toll. Efficient access to these arterial routes to the rest of the country is vital for Birmingham.

The A38 (M) provides a critical link between the M6 and the city centre via "spaghetti junction". The Tame Valley Viaduct forms a major part of this link and requires major maintenance and strengthening as part of a three phase management strategy. Without action to examine and trial maintenance options, it may be necessary to restrict access to the viaduct or impose closures, which would significantly harm the city's growth aspirations and those of the city's recently launched Enterprize Zone. The City Council is therefore keen to utilise resources from the Local Pinch Points Fund to trial maintenance options and protect the long term future of this key highway asset.
