Sutton: Four Oaks Ward
Sutton Four Oaks Ward is the most northerly Ward in the city of Birmingham. The Ward includes
the neighbourhoods known as Hill Hook, Hill Wood, Roughley, Doe Bank, Ley Hill, Four Oaks and Four Oaks Park with Mere Green being its commercial centre, offering a Community Centre and Library.
The Ward is characterised by a mixture of attractive, well-established and newly developed residential areas and by green belt to the north east of the town.
Four Oaks Ward's most notable feature is Sutton Park, which gained National Nature Reserve status in 1997. It is an amenity unique in the Midlands and one of the largest local authority parks of its kind in the United Kingdom. It is the remnant of an extensive forest which once covered most of the Midlands region and its association with the people of Sutton Coldfield dates back to the former Borough's Royal Charter of 1528. Most of the land area covered by the park is situated within the boundaries of Four Oaks Ward.
Once within the park, its natural features (including woodland and wetland) are large enough to give the illusion of open countryside. Sutton Park, which is also designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest, provides a rich habitat for a vast range of wildlife and plants.
Mere Green boasts a wealth of retail establishments as well as offices for service sector organisations providing good quality local employment.
The Ward is well connected by road and rail, served by the three 'Cross-City' rail stations of Four Oaks, Butlers Lane and Blake Street. These enable people to travel to Lichfield Trent Valley in the north and Redditch in the south, via Birmingham New Street station where the national rail network can be accessed. The M6 (Toll) motorway, the A5 and the A38 as well as a network of motorways are all accessible within a short distance.
