Sheltered Housing

Maintaining your independence and having your own front door becomes more and more important as we get older. Most people, though, recognise the need for greater support from outside sources - like their family, friends, the council or other organisations - as they grow older.

The 130 Sheltered Housing Schemes run by Birmingham City Council play an important part in helping people achieve this.

Sheltered Housing schemes are located across the city and come in a variety of accommodation types, such as bungalows and low and high rise flats. They are aimed at people who can usually manage on their own but who feel safer knowing that they call on the support of a professional member of staff if they need to. Many schemes have a residents' group where tenants can have a say in how their scheme is run and there are constituency and citywide Sheltered Housing Liaison Boards, whose members live in sheltered housing.

Each home is linked via an alarm to a professional member of staff when on duty from Monday to Friday and to the Careline alarm system at all other times. They will call on residents to offer advice and support, such as contacting Social Care and Health and local health services, but do not carry out any medical duties, cook, clean or shop.

How can I apply for Sheltered Council Housing?

  • If you are an older person (usually aged 50 or over), live in a
    Birmingham council or housing association property or are
    on the Housing Register (waiting list), you can apply to
    transfer to sheltered housing.
  • If you own your own home, you may still be able to apply.
