School governors are the most important volunteer workforce in education. Anyone aged 18 or over can volunteer and no specific qualifications are needed.

A full training programme is available and an advice team is on hand to provide support and guidance.

Volunteering as a school governor is a unique development opportunity that will enhance your employment prospects and CV through the experience that you gain in areas such as project management, recruitment and selection, budget control and data analysis.

School Governors have the right to reasonable time off from work for their public duties. You may not be paid for this so check with your HR Department.

As well as providing you an insight into the education system and opportunity to work alongside a wide range of people, your support and challenge will make a positive difference to a school in Birmingham and the outcomes for children at that school.

What’s involved?

School governing bodies are responsible for working with the school to ensure that it delivers a good quality education. Together with the headteacher, who is responsible for day-to-day management, they set the school's aims and policies.

The role of the school governor can be demanding but very rewarding. It involves a time commitment of on average 6 to 8 hours per month. If you don’t have that time to spare the role probably isn’t for you.

You will spend your time as a school governor:

  • Attending meetings of the governing body of your school usually outside of school hours.

  • Reading reports and papers and keeping up to date on the progress that the school is making.

  • Undertaking training in the role, which isn’t mandatory but is strongly recommended, at the very least the basic induction course.

  • Visiting the school from time to time during the school day.

Type of Governors

There are various types of governors in school governing bodies, all of whom are volunteers. These include:

  • Parent governors – elected by other parents at the school.

  • Staff governors – elected by other members of staff at the school.

  • Authority governors – appointed by local authority.

  • Community / Co-opted governors – appointed by the governing body as representatives of the wider community in which the school is based.

  • Foundation governors – are appointed by the school’s foundation (voluntary aided, voluntary controlled and foundation schools only).

  • Partnership governors – appointed by the governing bodies (foundation schools and foundation special schools).

In special schools, governing bodies may also include members of the health authority or voluntary organisations.

How to apply

The Local Authority is currently reviewing its procedure and processes relating to the recruitment and deployment of volunteer governors to maintained school and academy governing bodies.

Consequently, the Local Authority has taken the decision not to appoint or re-appoint representative governors until the review has been completed, and a new process has been agreed. We will be inviting volunteers to apply through the new process and against an amended criteria.
