Air Pollution
We will investigate the following complaints:
- Smoke from bonfires and chimneys at all premises
- Dust arising from commercial / industrial premises
- Smoke and dust arising from construction / demolition sites

We do not deal with complaints about smoke from vehicles on the road as this is dealt with by Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA).
Apart from those incidents which can be reported above the larger issue of air quality in Birmingham is also monitored by us. As part of these responsibilities the Environmental Protection Unit produce an annual air quality action plan and issue Environmental Permits to certain companies that have the potential to cause air and other pollution. To improve air quality in 1995 Birmingham was designated as a smoke control area. This means that residents are only allowed to burn authorised fuels in an open fireplace or use an exempt appliance with the correct fuel, for further information please see the ‘frequently asked questions’ section below.

We encourage you to take all waste materials to your local household recycling centre. However if you do have a garden bonfire please only burn dry tree clippings and dry clean wood. We also recommend any plastic refuse is recycled with your doorstep green waste collection.

There are no specific lighting up times in Birmingham however you must ensure you do not cause a nuisance to neighbours with any fire.
