How do I Apply for Planning Permission?

The simplest way of applying for planning permission is online through the Planning Portal. This means

  • No printing or postage costs
  • 24 hours a day service
  • Ability to create an electronic location plan
  • Add any attachments to your submission
  • Calculate the fee online

Please note : you cannot currently apply online for extensions of time and Non-Material Minor Amendment applications. You can however download the forms from the Planning Portal or by using the links on our forms page.

Apply online now on the Planning Portal

If you prefer you can download the planning application forms and submit them by post, Please note, we only require 2 copies of the forms, drawings and accompanying documents rather than 3 copies as stated on the Planning Portal.

Regardless of how you submit your application it cannot be progressed until all the necessary supporting information and the appropriate fee is received. Our checklists will help you identify what you need to include in your application.

Preparing your Plans

You can submit your application yourself provided you can prepare any technical drawings and supporting statements required. You may like to use a suitably qualified agent as many poorly prepared applications are declared invalid and are delayed, or refused planning permission.

Ordnance Survey Plan

You are required to provide a location plan showing the application site at a scale of 1:1250. This is usually provided on an Ordnance Survey Plan and can be purchased through the Planning Portal's Buy a Plan service or through our local suppliers.

Other Information to be Submitted

A list of information which must be submitted with your application is provided in our application checklists. A composite list of national and local validation criteria is attached below.

We also provide advice on what to include in a Design and Access Statement here.

Equalities Monitoring Form

It would help us when submitting your Planning Application if you could complete our Equalities Monitoring form so we can check there is a fair planning process for all. Monitoring is essential if we are to address the needs of all sections of the community. It will help us fulfil the Government’s aim to build sustainable and inclusive communities and to reduce social exclusion. This form is available here
