What is a Locally Listed Building?

A Locally Listed Building is a building, structure or feature which, whilst not listed by the Secretary of State, the Council feels to be an important part of Birmingham's heritage due to its architectural, historic or archaeological significance.

The grading system for Locally Listed Buildings is as follows:-

Grade A

These are buildings which are of statutory list quality and will be the subject of notification to English Heritage and/or the service of a Building Preservation Notice if imminently threatened.

Grade B

Grade B buildings, structures or features are important in the city wide architectural context or local street scene context, warranting positive efforts to ensure retention.

Grade C

These are of significance in the local historical/vernacular context including industrial archaeological features and worthy of retention.

Locally Listed Buildings in Birmingham

There are currently 441 locally listed buildings, structures and features in the city.

As with Statutorily Listed Buildings, any works carried out should preserve or enhance the building and any features of architectural or historic interest retained and appropriate materials used.

Inclusion in the Local List does not give the building any statutory protection but the City has additional policies in the Birmingham Plan to help guide development.
