Developing day services for adults with learning disabilities in Birmingham

Between 26 January and 17 April 2009 we held a consultation on the future of Birmingham City Council run day services for people with learning disabilities. Thank you to everyone that took part.

A Cabinet Report containing our recommendations for the future of day services for people with learning disabilities was presented to Cabinet on the 11 May 2009 and approved. The Cabinet Report and two sets of appendices are attached at the bottom of this page.

One of the key decisions taken was that Collingwood and Aldridge Road day centres would close in December 2009.

We know that coping with change can be difficult.

Our staff are working very carefully with service users and their carers to support them through these changes.

Everyone that uses Collingwood and Aldridge Road day centres has been able to:

  • visit and look around other day centres they might be able to go to, and
  • have an individual meeting with their carers and support staff to think about what they want to do next.

We have asked the people who go to Collingwood and Aldridge Road centres to tell us what they would like to do when their day
centre closes.

We have asked them to tell us if they want to:

  • go to one of our other learning disability day centres, or
choose not to go to a day centre but to do other things, like
  • working with the Community Options team to find activities to do in the day, evening or at the weekend.

What happens next

A team of staff called the Project Group are looking at where people say they want to go and what they want to do after they stop going to Collingwood and Aldridge Road.
They hope to have worked out where people will be moving to by the end of September 2009.Then the team will work with staff, service users and their carers to plan their move.

When will people move?

How quickly people move will depend on:

  • when the service user would like to move
  • arranging transport
  • making sure there are enough staff to support people when they move.

What else needs to happen?

We know that some of our day centres could do with better toilets and changing rooms. We are looking at ways to get this work done.

We will send out another newsletter in October 2009.
