Improving Local Parks

Hidden2
Overview

Did you know you can use the Find My Local application to find parks near you or to find the name of the park that you need.

Our parks and open spaces are designed to meet the needs of the local community but over time these needs change. Major park refurbishments and minor improvements are undertaken where funding is available and these are always done in consultation with the local community.

To support parks improvements we gather evidence of the local need for new facilities such as paths, benches and playgrounds, we will record any requests that are made and use this to support funding bids. You can record your request using the Request New Parks Facility button.

Many of our parks and open spaces are supported by groups of local residents who form “Friends of Parks” groups.

Friends groups are active in many different ways including:

  • Carrying out practical tasks such as clean ups, habitat management, tree planting
  • Bidding for funds for park improvements
  • Advising on local priorities for improvements
  • Promoting the value and benefits of open space
  • Assisting with surveys and consultations

Friends groups are members of the Birmingham Open Spaces Forum (BOSF) that campaigns for better resources and recognition for parks.

Visit the BOSF website if you are interested in finding out more about your local Friends Group.

Essential Information
  • Requests are reviewed and prioritised by the local parks officer in consultation with Constituency Team and local members and Friends Groups.

The response to requests is dependent on resources being available and the evidence of need and level of support within the community.

New facilities must meet health and safety requirements.

  • The Green Flag Award is the national standard for parks and green spaces in England and Wales. It encourages parks and green spaces to achieve high environmental standards, creating a benchmark of excellence in recreational green areas. Birmingham currently has six parks that have the Green Flag Award and each year the number of sites achieving the award has increased.
