Birmingham's Low Carbon Transport Strategy
Road transport accounts for around 24% of Birmingham’s carbon emissions, and reducing these emissions is essential to the city meeting its 60% CO2 reduction target by 2027.
We are working with partners including Centro, National Express and Network Rail to improve public transport options. For the quickest and shortest route plan your public transport route using real time information. Our new coach station in Digbeth, plans for massive improvements to New Street Station and the proposed HST2 (High Speed Rail) should dramatically improve sustainable connectivity to Britain and Europe.
We are also working to promote and improve walking and cycling routes within the city, which could help you stay healthy, save money and reduce carbon pollution. If you do drive you could save seven pounds a week on fuel through smarter driving.
New technology now exists to support a transition from petrol/diesel cars and vans to electric vehicles, liquid petroleum and hydrogen fuel cell. This will significantly reduce carbon emissions.
Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure
We were a partner in the CABLED (Coventry and Birmingham Low Emissions Demonstration) project. This involved around 100 electric vehicles being driven on city streets. As part of CABLED, public electric vehicle charge points were be installed at locations around the city centre.
The CABLED project finished in Summer 2012. We are now working with Plugged-In Midlands to implement a network of 18 electric vehicle charge points across the city in on- and off-street locations. This includes upgrading 4 of the points installed by CABLED.
These points are currently being installed. Further details will be available here soon.
In the meantime, if you were a member of CABLED, or have an electric vehicle, and your would like to make use of the new charge points, you will need to become a member of Plugged-In Midlands to get a charging card from them.
