Birmingham City Council is facing a very large challenge with cuts in funding that are unprecedented. We are looking at how we can continue to provide essential services to residents whilst supporting greater fairness and future prosperity.
As part of a Service Review process the Coroner and Mortuary services are asking for your views on proposals that are intended to create savings for the service.

The Coroner for Birmingham and Solihull districts is an independent judicial officer presiding over a Court of Record within the English Judicial system and discharges his/her duties in accordance with the Coroner's Act 1988, the Coroner's Rules 1984, and other legislation. The Coroner is independent from the West Midlands Police and although appointed and paid by Birmingham City Council she is not their employee; the Coroner is not a Local Government Officer but holds office under the Crown.
The Coroner can be contacted 24 hours a day, 365 days a year in the event of an emergency. However, during normal working hours the Coroner is usually either in Court, in meetings or giving talks. Contact during normal working hours should, therefore, be initially with the office. You are welcome to contact the Coroner at her home or office outside normal working hours if your need is urgent and cannot wait until the office reopens. However, the Coroner will not be able to deal with matters for you if they involve other agencies or individuals who are not working at the time you telephone the Coroner. It is not appropriate to telephone outside normal office hours unless it is URGENT and there is something that the Coroner can achieve immediately.
At present, the Coroner or one of her Assistant Coroners attends the office between 10.00am and 12.00 noon every Saturday, Sunday and Public Holiday throughout the year including both Christmas Day and Easter Sunday. The Coroner provides this service voluntarily and it is intended only for the issuing of 'Out of England' forms. If an 'Out of England' form needs to be signed please call 07980 312834 [this number should only be used and will only be available between 10am and 12 midday on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays], arrangements can then be made to visit the office for the paperwork to be completed.
This service is particularly valuable for those people who wish to take a deceased person's body out of England for a funeral overseas rather than proceedings with the burial as soon as possible. You should note that in any such case you will need to employ the services of a Funeral Director. All the Funeral Directors in Birmingham and Solihull know the requirements of Her Majesty's Coroner for Birmingham and Solihull and you must contact the Funeral Director before you contact the Coroner.
The Funeral Director will provide you with the appropriate application form which must be completed before you attend at the Coroner's Office.
When you attend you will need to produce at least the following papers:
(1) The Application Form provided by the Funeral Director and duly completed.
(2) Form 104 Removal Notice.
(3) The Deceased's Passport.
(4) The Applicant's Passport.
(5) A Medical Certificate of Cause of Death or a Death Certificate.
Please note that the application must be made personally by the next of kin who will need to attend the Coroner's Office. In the event that the next of kin is the spouse of the deceased and is too distressed to attend, then the application may be made by a child of the deceased.
Repatriation of a body
If the death occurs abroad and you wish to bring the body back to England or Wales, the Coroner may need to be involved. In certain circumstances an inquest may be necessary. You can ask advice from the Coroner's Office; please use the contact details given on this page.

In the event that the Coroner cannot be contacted out of normal office hours then please telephone the Police Force Control Room on 0845 113 5000 who will then, on your behalf, contact one of the Assistants at their home.
There are NO parking facilities at the Coroner's Court or in Newton Street. There are on street parking meters in Steelhouse Lane and Corporation Street.
Court Hearings are held at the Coroner's Court. The Court has a communal waiting area, vending machine for hot/cold refreshment drinks with access and toilet facilities for people with disabilities. There are also facilities for the hard of hearing available in the Court and Reception area. The Court is a No Smoking area. There are no children's rooms available. Those having to attend the Court who have special requirements are requested to make contact with the Office in advance.
