A Brief History
On 13 April 1899 George Tallis, Chairman of the Cemetery Committee, opened Brandwood End Cemetery, which was administered by Kings Norton Rural District Council. With the extension of Birmingham's boundaries in 1911, the cemetery came under the administration of the Birmingham Corporation. The cemetery was gradually extended over the years and is now some 53 acres, 2 of which were sold in 1919 to the Jewish Community.
The grounds are a fine example of a Victorian garden with avenues of Scots Pine, Cypress and Wellingtonia. This magnificent planting earned the cemetery a grade II listing in the Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in England in 2001.
The cemetery has Gothic style mortuary chapels, which were added to the statutory list of Buildings of Special Architectual or Historic Interest in 1977.
Grave Sections
The following graves are available, New Lawn Adult/Child graves within the Muslim section. Adult and Childs Public Graves.
Ashes plots for the burial of two sets of cremated remains are also available.
Grave Memorials
A wide variety of memorial designs are present within the cemetery, however the type of section in which a grave lies will determine the type of memorial permissible.
On a Lawn type section only a headstone type memorial is permissible. Kerbing, fencing or chippings are not permitted, however the ground may be cultivated up to 18" (46cm) from the headstone.
On a Traditional section a headstone and/or kerb-set, which runs the length of the grave, are permissible. Again no fencing permitted.
A copy of the Rules and Regulations relating to the cemetery can be obtained from the office.

Tree Walk
Brandwood End Cemetery was planted with deciduous and evergreen trees, popular at the time. The tree walk goes through the central and oldest area of the cemetery, starting by the Lodge.
The Friends Of Brandwood End Cemetery have put together this tree walk around the cemetery grounds. More information on The Friends Of Brandwood End together with details of this tree walk can be found at www.fbec.org.uk or you can download and print the Tree Walk file, found at the bottom of this page.
