Register a birth

Birmingham Register Office is open to register births by appointment only.

You do not need to bring your baby to the appointment. If you are not able to arrange childcare and need to bring your baby and up to 3 children to the registration appointment, this will be allowed. If there are more than 3 children, email us so that we can arrange a specific appointment where children can be accommodated.

If you are deaf or hard of hearing and would like support in completing the registration, email us at RObirths@birmingham.gov.uk and we will contact you to agree how we can support you.


You would normally register the birth of your baby within 42 days; however, we are currently dealing with an excessive number of birth registrations so your appointment may fall outside of this time frame. You do not need to contact us unless you have been unable to book an appointment to register within 12 weeks of the birth.

The birth should be registered within the registration district where your baby was born. If your baby is born in Birmingham, you should make an appointment to register the birth at the Birmingham Register Office.

We are however currently working with Solihull Register Office and if it is more convenient for you, you can make an appointment to register the birth of your baby at Solihull Register Office until further notice.

The appointment will take place at The Core, Theatre Square, Solihull B91 3RG. Any copy birth certificates after the registration must be ordered from Birmingham Register Office.

If you are legally married or in a registered civil partnership with the other parent to your new-born child, only one of you needs to visit the Birmingham Register Office to register the birth although both of you may attend if you wish.

If you are not legally married or in a registered civil partnership with one another, you must attend together if you would both like to be included as parents in the register.

The Register a birth page on the Gov.uk website offers details on how the registration process works for other parental circumstances.

There is no charge for registering a birth, but there is a cost for any certificates that you wish to have. You can buy full certificates, showing the parents details, on the day of registration for £11 each. Payment can be made by card only.

To register the birth, we ask you to to bring the following things with you:

  • The hospital discharge papers or the red book
  • Your passport or birth certificate
  • Your marriage certificate, if applicable
  • An official document showing your name and current address, such as a driving licence or utility bill
  • Someone who can speak and read both English and your language fluently, if you can’t speak or understand English.

You can order extra copies of the birth certificate online after registering.

In the event that anyone arriving to register a birth is more than 10 minutes late, it may not be possible for the appointment to take place and your appointment may be rearranged. The rearranged appointment may not be on the same day.
