Meet author Anne Bennett

Anne Bennett will be visiting four community libraries to promote her new book If You Were the Only Girl, a story of love across the class divide set between the wars. Meet Anne at Ward End Library Thursday 14 February, 10.30am, Hall Green Library Thursday 14 February, 2pm, Yardley Wood Library Friday 15 February, 10.30am or Frankley Library Friday 15 February, 2pm. Please contact the individual library to book tickets.

More about the author
Author Anne Bennett was born in the Horsefair district of Birmingham. The daughter of Roman Catholic Irish immigrants, she grew up in a tight-knit community. For many years she taught in schools to the north of Birmingham, before an accident put paid to that career. This gave her the chance to write full time. She has four children and four grandchildren. In 2006, after sixteen years in a wheelchair, Anne was able to walk again. She is the author of almost 20 novels, and is a much-loved voice in the women’s saga genre.

Man Booker Prize - Winner announced

Hilary Mantel has won the Man Booker prize with Bring up the Bodies.
This is the sequel to Wolf Hall which won in 2009.

Birmingham Libraries were delighted that Birmingham was chosen by Transworld Publishers (in partnership with The Reading Agency) to be the destination for their ‘Big City Read’.


S J Watson, at the launch in Birmingham, introducing his book Before I go to sleep which is the chosen novel for the Big City Read.

S J Watson visited Birmingham Libraries in February 2012 for a lively evening of questions and discussion about Before I go to sleep.






Ian Rankin

Ian Rankin visits Birmingham Libraries

The UK's best selling crime writer Ian Rankin headlined Birmingham Libraries Festival Fringe programme, which is now in its third year.

Birmingham Libraries were privileged to host the evening as Ian launched the publication of The Impossible Dead at the Library Theatre. Ian delighted readers who were given an insight into his work and particularly the Malcolm Fox series. One reader commented: "An excellent talk, vibrant and entertaining and very insightful. Its always nice to meet a 'hero' and get your book signed!"
