Private Development Section
Birmingham City Council is the Highway Authority for all the publicly maintained highways in the city other than Trunk Roads. There are many ways in which land can become public highway and one of these is for the land to be dedicated within a legal agreement.
The Council adopts roads and footways (in some cases emergency links, footpaths, verges, visibility splays) and infrastructure such as traffic signals, street lighting and highway drainage by different methods as stated in the Highways Act 1980 and thereby takes on the maintenance responsibility.
The Private Development Section undertakes the management of design approval, construction planning, site inspection, enforcement and adoption of highway works built by developers. The following pages will give you a greater understanding of what is involved:
