Information and advice on equipment to help make everyday life easier and safer
There is range of equipment that can help you stay safe and independent if you have difficulty with everyday tasks such as:
- moving around in the house or outside
- reaching things
- preparing or eating food
- getting in or out of bed
- using the bathroom.
At the Assist Birmingham Centre, we can give you information and advice about different kinds of equipment and services that might help you, show you how the equipment works and arrange an assessment for you.
Free information, advice and services
For free, impartial information and advice about equipment and services that may help you with everyday tasks, please phone us or call in at the centre. Our contact details and opening times are below, under the heading More information and contact details.
In the centre, you can talk to us about the equipment and services that are available, or you can use the 'Information point' computer to do a 'self-assessment' of your needs. Equipment and services includes:
- Adaptations to your home: advice on how to the adaptations you might need to make life easier and safer for you at home, including if you want to make the adaptations yourself.
- Assistive technology (also called 'telecare'): equipment that can help you stay independent and safe in your home, such as sensors that warn you if the sink or bath is overflowing, and monitors that let someone else know if you fall and need help.
- Blue Badge Service: we can give you advice about how a Blue Badge might help you if have a severe difficulty with walking, and help with your application.
- Rehabilitation and enablement (occupational therapy): we can give you an assessment at the centre to find out what help you need with, for example, using stairs, using the bathroom or preparing meals.
Workshops
We also hold 14 free workshops at the Assist Birmingham Centre for people with disabilities and carers. There are a variety of workshops that give information and and include the following:
- Arthritis Care: if you have arthritis, this workshop could help you to protect your joints, be more independent and active and find out about equipment which might help you.
- Relaxation: if you experience pain, difficulty sleeping or stress, this workshop will teach you a relaxation technique that you can use at home.
- Self-help support groups: find out how the support of other people in these small, informal and friendly groups can help you make real and positive change in your life.
- New Technology (Telecare): a chance to look at the wide range of equipment that can help you stay independent and safe in your own home.
