On Thursday 19th May we welcomed the students of Lakey Lane Primary School into our brand new Development Kitchen at our HQ in Birmingham Science Park.

We had the pleasure of meeting Harrison, Sakina, Sabah, Aima, Sahl, Momina, Amnie, Jack and Gabriel of the Years 2-6 Student Council. The group was chaperoned by Mrs Adamson who is a parent advisor/learning mentor and Mrs Henry who is a parent and also a parent governor.

This was the first (with many more to come) student group we’ve welcomed to our innovation centre and we were delighted to talk to them about our food and provenance, seek ideas for future school menus and importantly, offer them a wholesome, nutritious and (most importantly) school food compliant roast dinner.

Our Executive Development Chef, Wayne Edge welcomed the team and introduced them to a range of fresh vegetables all of which are local sourced. Amongst the regular fayre of onions and salad we looked at sweet potatoes and pumpkins. All of the children knew that carrots are good for your eyes, and there was much laughter when someone suggested they’re good for rabbits!

Chef Ian introduced the menu of the day – Veggie Cannelloni, Roast Dinner and Vegetables, Yorkshire Puddings and Gravy. The eager learners then went to eat in the boardroom – A very well behaved group of ambassadors they were too.

On return, Gabriel was appointed Head Chef and Sabah as Sous Chef and all the other children were junior chefs.  Chef Wayne then supervised the creation of Knickerbocker Glories, where each child chopped their own fruit, whisked the iced-cream and created their own unique deserts.

It was great to see the children then explain all about healthy eating to the Cityserve team!

All of our junior budding chefs, left with a memento of their experience in the form of chefs aprons and hats – which hopefully they’ll use at home in the kitchen.

We would like to thanks the staff and students of Lakey Lane Primary School for making our first ‘CityKitchen Live’ school event so memorable.   Harrison, Sakina, Sabah, Aima, Sahl, Momina, Amnie, Jack and Gabriel are real ambassadors for the school.

Mrs Cockell, Lakey Lane Head Teacher said:

‘Wow!!! Our children have just bounded back in absolutely buzzing!!!!  Thanks so much for giving them such a fab time!!

Big, big thanks!!’

Over the coming months we look forward to welcoming more school groups to CityKitchen Live!
