Colleagues of the month

Congratulations to not one but TWO star performers gaining recognition for excellence in June.

Ann Connor and Mary (Rose) McGovern, Catering Supervisor and Deputy Supervisor at Conway School have been instrumental in setting up the school breakfast club to include hot food; the numbers have increased and plaudits have been received regarding the difference it has made in improving the learning environment.

Throughout June, Ann & Rose delivered a series of very popular cookery clubs for the pupils with hands-on tuition on a range of dishes including old favourites like Cracknell and Pizza:

  • Year 1 made cornflake cakes with the cooks. They said that they would try to make them at home – it was a new and fun experience for many of them.
  • The Year 5 children said that they took the skills they learnt with Ann and Rose and shared them with their parents; they have baked before at home but often “got it wrong!”
  • All 60 year 6 children made pizza.
  • Each year group had the opportunity to cook with Ann and Rosie – for many of the children it was their first attempt at cooking.

The cookery clubs have proven so successful there are plans for more during the next academic year.

Ann and Rosie recently baked 2500 cakes to help raise money for the Anton Reid Foundation. The charity has been supported by the school for a couple of years and they aim to purchase a defibrillator.

The school said:

[In addition to lunch service] “Ann and Rose cook and serve at breakfast club everyday. Without them, we would not be able to provide hot food. As you may know, many of our children come to school without having breakfast. This affects the children’s ability to concentrate, learn and behave. Since hot food was introduced we have seen an increase in breakfast club attendance. And because they cook and serve the breakfast, that enables us to open the club up to younger pupils.

They are both incredibly kind and approachable and always go that extra to support charities. They make cakes when we raise money for Children in Need and Macmillian Cancer Trust. I’ve asked them for support in September to raise money for the NSPCC and they agreed to it without hesitation.

The children love Ann and Rose as do a number of staff.”
