How to get adult social care services

If you are finding looking after yourself difficult, please visit our mycareinbirmingham website for information and advice.

When you have considered the advice and services you can access for yourself on My Care in Birmingham, and still feel you need assistance. You, or someone on your behalf, will need to make a referral to the City Council, or visit our How To Contact Us page.

Assessment

If you need an assessment, we will undertake one with you. For more information about assessments, please visit the page What Is An Assessment page at www.mycareinbirmingham.org.uk

If you will have ‘substantial difficulty’ in engaging in the assessment process, we can arrange for an independent advocate for someone to speak on your behalf. For more information, please visit our advocacy page at www.mycareinbirmingham.org.uk

We will provide you with advice, information, and enablement services to help you be as independent as possible. We may supply you with equipment to assist you to look after yourself.

If you have other care needs, the Council may be able to provide help to you, if they meet the eligibility criteria in the Care Act 2014, criteria for adult social care (or where appropriate the Mental Health Act 1983)

Personal budget

To help in planning your care, we will allocate you a Personal Budget. This is an amount of money that must be spent on meeting your eligible care needs. For more information see the page What is a Personal Budget.

We will support you to take your Personal Budget in the form of a Direct Payment. This is the best way to give you the most choice, and control over how your care is arranged.

For more information, please visit the various pages about Direct Payments.

Care and support plan

The care and support arranged to meet your needs will be written into your Care and Support Plan, and you will be given a copy of the plan.

Your care and support plan will be reviewed regularly, or if your needs change, a new assessment may be needed.
