Applications open for Clean Air Zone exemption permits

Clean Air Zone cloudAhead of the launch of Birmingham’s Clean Air Zone this summer, applications are now open for temporary exemption permits.

The exemption permits will be available to residents, low income workers and businesses in the Clean Air Zone for a period of one to two years. All of these exemption permits are subject to eligibility criteria, including the ownership of a vehicle that does not meet the emission standards for the Clean Air Zone, and are only available on application through brumbreathes.co.uk.

School Streets

Children in Council ChamberThis morning, pupils and staff from 20 schools attended our School Summit to have their say on the draft Birmingham Transport Plan.

At the summit, we launched a brand new Switch Off School Streets toolkit, including resources to help schools to run an ‘anti-idling’ campaign. To tie in with World Poetry Day on 21 March we’re even inviting schools to come up with their own Switch Off themed poem.

We are also inviting expressions of interests from schools that would like to be part of the next phase of our Car Free School Streets initiative from September 2020. Applications close on Friday 3 April.

Cycling in the West Midlands

Bike Life West Midlands

Sustrans have published the latest Bike Life report, this year covering the whole of the West Midlands region. Bike Life reports on progress towards making cycling an attractive and everyday means of travel. It includes information about facilities to encourage cycling and results of an independent survey of 1,554 residents aged 16 and above.

West Midlands cycling and walking network plan

Transport for West Midlands are asking for your views on their investment plans for cycling and walking in the West Midlands. Add your comments before 24 March.

The regional cycling and walking plan will sit alongside Birmingham's adopted Walking and Cycling Strategy with Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan.

Workplace travel planning

Many workplaces and individuals are already taking action to improve air quality by changing the way they travel. Modeshift STARS is a national travel planning scheme which rewards excellence in the promotion of cleaner, greener, healthier travel.

In October we will be presenting the first Modeshift STARS awards to workplaces in Birmingham and you can be one of these.
