From the start of September work on Birmingham’s Westside Metro extension is set to reach a major milestone when tramway construction progresses along Broad Street.

Once complete the Metro will run from Grand Central to Victoria Square, Centenary Square, Brindley Place/Broad Street, Five Ways and Hagley Road.

From Monday 2 September additional sections of Broad Street will be closed to vehicles.

Public transport, walking or cycling remain the best ways to travel into and around Birmingham, just be sure to check your journey before you travel

Westside is open for business

The many hotels, bars and restaurants in the Broad Street area remain open for business as usual. Pedestrian access will be maintained and there will be taxi drop off and pick up facilities between Sheepcote Street and Bridge Street.

The newly refurbished Centenary Square is now open and well worth a visit. From December 2019 you will also be able to catch the Metro there.

The pedestrian and cycling subways under Five Ways roundabout remain open.

If you have to drive

If you need to travel by car, use alternative routes or leave extra time for your journey.

Please note you will not be able to drive along the full length of Broad Street. The section of Broad Street from Sheepcote Street to Bridge Street is open for access to frontages and taxi pick up points only. Please do not try to drive here unless you are completing a delivery/pick up.

Enforcement cameras along Sheepcote Street, which monitor traffic moving along the bus gate (similar to a bus lane) will be switched on this autumn. Please do not drive through the bus gate, as you may be fined.

Five Ways roundabout remains open although busier than usual. Five Ways underpass and Paradise Circus are still closed to all traffic.
