Biodiversity Charter for Schools

LeafletWhats this all about?

This charter aims to support your school at a local level to be a sustainable school.

The Biodiversity Charter was created to support BASIC-21 a Birmingham Sustainable School initiative. Together with the Litter Charter it helps you plan and implement actions that improve your environment. Eco-Schools and Healthy Schools are two other initiatives supported by this charter and because it encourages outdoor, hands on activities it also supports Every Child Matters, Learning Outside the classroom and BBC Breathing Places for Schools.

How can you help biodiversity?

Get your school involved in protecting and promoting biodiversity in Birmingham.
•Promote biodiversity in your school grounds with the assistance of the Wildlife Trust.
• Attract birds and other wildlife to your school grounds through the RSPB “Bird Friendly Schools” programme
• Link children with nature to protect biodiversity in the future by learning about wildlife and the environment through the “Education Naturally” or “Forest School” programmes run by Birmingham City Councils Parks Ranger Service.
• Do one thing for biodiversity each term by using BBC Breathing Places for Schools information pack.

How can we help you?

Birmingham Park’s Ranger Service.

We offer a wide range of biodiversity linked activities including our “Education Naturally” programme for primary schools, “Forest Schools” programmes, field study sessions, work experience placements and project support. We can visit your school but we also offer a range of safe accessible green spaces across Birmingham that you can visit.

RSPB
The RSPB has fun and inspiring education projects that can help your school to achieve the Birmingham Schools Biodiversity Charter. Why not become a Bird Friendly School, monitor your very own “Wildsquare” around your school grounds or take part in our hands on Living Classrooms programme at Sandwell Valley nature reserve.

The Wildlife Trust for Birmingham and the Black Country
We passionately believe that children should have access to the outdoor environment both for education and play.
One of the most accessible and sustainable methods of delivering this is through developing school grounds. To support this we have created a series of products, collectively know as the “Outdoor Classroom”. These products not only benefit the environment, but also the whole school community;- the children, the staff and parents who have the opportunity to engage in our workshops.

What to do next?

Please see the form attached at the bottom of this page. Just complete the form and email it back to us.
If you have ticked every box in the ‘yes’ column your school is obviously very biodiversity friendly.

If you are unable to tick yes on all the boxes please return your form anyway because we can help you. We provide educational visits, activity sheets, advice on wildlife gardening, building bird boxes and feeders, wildlife information and we can help you create your own Biodiversity Action Plan, it's really easy when you discover the resources that are available.
When we receive your reply a member of the Birmingham Schools Biodiversity Charter partnership will contact you to arrange a visit to your school.

Why not find out more about biodiversity in Birmingham by getting out and about and visiting some of Birmingham’s parks and open spaces? For more information visit our parks web page at www.birmingham.gov.uk/parks
