Birmingham City Council is a Beacon authority in 2007-2008 for ‘Increasing voluntary and community sector service delivery’.

The Beacon Scheme, sponsored by Communities and Local Goverment (CLG) and managed by the Improvement and Development Agency (IDeA), celebrates excellence and innovation in local government.

The Third Sector Project team has produced a DVD to highlight developments and partnership working since winning the coveted Beacon Award. You will soon be able to access the DVD from this page so please re-visit us in the next few days.

BEACON PEER SUPPORT PROGRAMME

Following the hugely successful two year dissemination programme in increasing voluntary and community sector service delivery, Birmingham City Council and the London Borough of Croydon are jointly delivering a further programme of improvement support activities in 2009.

Our new Beacon Peer Support programme can help you to improve and deliver against N17 and supporting local indicators.

Further information is available here: Beacon Peer Support

This programme is linked with the National Programme for Third Sector Commissioning, and the third sector policy work of the Office of the Third Sector, the Local Government Association and the National Association of Voluntary and Community Action (NAVCA).

Background to the 2007-8 Beacon Award

Winning the Beacon means Birmingham – the council and its key partners in the voluntary and community sector – has been recognised nationally for its best practice in partnership working and collaborative service delivery. To win the award, the council:
  • applied with a range of case studies showing how outcomes have improved through delivery partnerships with voluntary organisations; see our application below
  • hosted an assessment visit by civil servants and national experts showcasing the wealth of voluntary action and capacity building services in the city;
  • gave a final presentation to IDeA to convey the key message that the council’s culture has changed as a result of practical work to implement the Birmingham Compact, with relationships between the council and the voluntary sector significantly improved.
IDeA graded the council’s application as ‘excellent’ overall. The assessors praised the enthusiasm of everyone involved, and their commitment to work together to improve services. They also highlighted strong, motivational leadership on third sector issues at all levels as a success factor in the bid. see the assessment and other significant documents below
