Bath Row and Holloway Head
The success of the Broad Street corridor regeneration followed by the Mailbox and the new developments in Attwood Green, has brought the future of the Bath Row and Holloway Head area into the spotlight.
The area, between Suffolk Street Queensway, the canal and Attwood Green, has until recent years been separated from the life and activities of the city centre, yet it has a rich mix of residential, employment, and community uses. With new development activity on its doorstep, the area is being reconnected with the city core, and there have already been significant mixed-use developments approved on Commercial Street which will capitalise on the success of Mailbox.
The key objectives of the Framework are:
- To transform Bath Row and Holloway Head into a major city centre rban boulevard
- To build upon the potential of St. ThomasPeace Gardens as a new city centre square.
- To strengthen pedestrian links between Attwood Green / Broad Street / Five Ways and the City Core.
- To promote mixed-use development opportunities to expand city centre commercial uses and a variety of residential uses to link into Attwood Green.
- To promote and support employment uses in the area.
- To create a high quality of design in new development which builds upon local character and transforms the area into a distinct city centre location.
- To guide the re-use and refurbishment of the collection of listed buildings on Severn Street and Blucher Street.
-
To guide improvement and part development of Holloway Head playing fields and related reconfiguration of uses affecting Lytham Croft and Irving Street area.
The Framework was consulted upon in the Summer of 2004 and was reported to Cabinet with amendments on 2nd August 2005 where it was adopted as Supplementary Planning Guidance to The Birmingham Plan (UDP) and will be used for the determination of future planning applications in the area.
