Archaeology Strategy

Gibb Street Excavations
Gibb Street Excavations

We have prepared an Archaeology Strategy (1.4mb PDF) to provide detailed guidance on protecting and managing Birmingham’s archaeological resource.

This provides detailed advice to developers on the archaeological implications of development schemes. It explains the practical application of government advice and the City Council's own policies, particularly in the light of recent cases which have demonstrated the quality of the city's archaeological remains and how they can be properly protected and managed without preventing or discouraging the regeneration which is essential to Birmingham's future. The Strategy sets out what the City Council will require from potential developers to achieve this, and the Council's own role in the process.

The Strategy was adopted by the City Council's cabinet as Supplementary Planning Guidance on 8 December 2003.

For hard copies of the Archaeology Strategy please contact Birmingham's Planning Archaeologist.
