Councillors' allowances

Councillors are paid a Basic Allowance to support them in carrying out their work they do as local councillors. Councillors with additional duties and responsibilities also receive a Special Responsibility Allowance for the extra work in relation to this.

Allowances payable to Councillors are detailed within the Members Allowances Scheme.

The size of the allowance for the various Councillor roles is decided by the city council. In taking this decision, the council must consider a report from an Independent Remuneration Panel.

The Independent Remuneration Panel review the Members Allowances Scheme and the levels of allowances paid and report to the council on what is appropriate based on the panel's analysis of the changing demands and pressures of members' workloads.

The 2022-2023 report from Birmingham Independent Remuneration Panel on Members’ Allowances was presented to City Council on Tuesday 5th February 2024.

City Council agreed to postpone the increase to the Basic and Special Responsibility Allowances recommended in the report, from the Independent Remuneration Panel, until 1 April 2026.

The details of the allowances paid to each councillor are published annually on the website.
