A4540 Ring Road red route proposal

birmingham central mosque, highgate middleway

The A4540 Ring Road (previously known as the Middle Ring Road) is an important route for road users and pedestrians.

Over the next two years, the whole of the A4540 Ring Road is targeted for Red Route improvements to benefit general road users and pedestrians and to help traffic flow more freely.

This includes Dartmouth Middleway, Lawley Middleway, Bordesley Middleway, Camp Hill, Camp Hill Middleway, Highgate Middleway, Belgrave Middleway, Lee Bank Middleway (including underpass), Islington Row, Ladywood Middleway, Icknield Street, and New John Street West. Roundabouts along the route are also included.

The proposed Red Route Traffic Order includes these measures:

  • Replacing existing yellow line waiting restrictions with new Red Route lines, signs and enforcement.
  • Reviewing all existing parking and loading restrictions to provide more consistent and easy-to-understand restrictions.
  • Reviewing the way all main junctions work to improve traffic flow and safety where possible.
  • Providing raised entrances to side roads where practical.
  • Other general measures as necessary, e.g. upgrading existing traffic signs and improving road markings.

The benefits this will bring include:

  • The efficiency of the available road space will be improved, helping to tackle congestion.
  • It will allow buses to keep moving, which improves bus journey times.
  • It will benefit the environment, as pollution from vehicle emissions will be reduced as traffic is allowed to flow more freely.
  • A safer and more pleasant environment will be provided for pedestrians, which include improved crossing facilities at side road junctions.
  • People with disabilities will benefit from specifically allocated and well enforced Blue Badge parking places near shops and businesses.
  • Loading and short term parking facilities will be reviewed and will be clearly marked with parking boxes and signs.
