The city council, working with Travel West Midlands and Centro, is considering improvements along the A45 Coventry Road through Digbeth and Deritend, along the Small Heath Highway and Coventry Road to the Solihull boundary.
The A45 Coventry Road is an important route for road users and pedestrians, and a major bus route between Birmingham and Solihull.
The improvements, which are intended to benefit pedestrians, cyclists, bus users and motorists, will follow the route of the 58 and 60 bus services. They will include work to upgrade bus stops on the old part of Coventry Road through Small Heath and the 60 route through Sheldon.

A Red Route Traffic Order is proposed along the A45 Coventry Road corridor (including the Small Heath bypass, comprising these measures:
- Replacing existing yellow line waiting restrictions with new Red Route lines, signs and enforcement.
- Reviewing all existing parking and loading restrictions to provide more consistent and easy-to-understand restrictions.
- Reviewing the way all main junctions work to improve traffic flow and safety where possible.
- Providing raised entrances to side roads where practical.
- Other general measures as necessary, e.g. upgrading existing traffic signs and improving road markings.

|

Bus Showcase improvements to be carried out along the A45 Coventry Road corridor, including through the Small Heath section of old Coventry Road and along Queens Park Road include:
- Improving all bus stops to include new showcase standard shelters and raised kerbs for easy access. Bus shelters will be equipped to provide real time information in future. Bus lay-bys will be removed where this is considered better for passengers boarding and leaving buses.
- Giving buses priority where this will not have a harmful impact on other road users.
- Reviewing existing bus lanes, providing upgraded signs and road markings and surfacing all bus lanes in green.
- Improving pedestrian access to bus stops, including removal of subways and replacing with road crossings where practical.
